Liriope is one of the best evergreen ground covers because it multiplies rapidly and is so tough it requires little maintenance.

The two major species are big blue Liriope muscari and creeping Liriope spicata. Liriope muscari grows to about 12 to 18 inches wide clumps. Liriope spicata spreads rapidly by long, tough underground stems and will cover a wide area.
Used as a groundcover under trees or shrubs and on slopes and banks, Liriope muscari also works as border plants. Spreading indefinitely, Liriope spicata is perfect as a lawn replacement and erosion control, though it can be invasive. It spreads rapidly through underground rhyzomes creating a vigorous, dense, soil grabbing root system. It is cold hardy through zone 4 and performs equally well in full sun to full shade. The fine textured leaves rise to a height of up to about 16 inches. Use Liriope spicata for rapid, aggressive coverage and where containment is not a problem. Large slopes or beds controlled with a defined border such as metal edging, pavement or concrete are ideal.
Grown in deep shade or full sun, sand or clay, Liriope tolerates heat, drought and salt spray, provided it is in well-drained soil. More sun does produce more flowers. Plant up to one foot apart, and divide every three or four years, if desired. Mow in late winter before spring growth begins at the highest possible cutting height and just watch it grow.
