Heuchera
There are approximately 50 native Heuchera species, all from North America. Common names are alumroot and coral bells (coral bells because of its terra cotta colored, tiny bell-shaped flowers). With its palmately lobed leaves on long petioles and a thick, woody rootstock, a wide array of leaf colors, sizes and textures makes Heuchera a subtle, refined beauty option for any garden.

Plants grow to 12 to 16 inches in tight mounds. Best grown in organically rich, humus, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Grow in full sun, with moist soil conditions, in the north. Filtered to full shade in the south. Late spring to late summer brings graceful spikes of small bell-like flowers to use as cut flowers or to leave for the hummingbirds. Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years.
